DIY Systems and Their Drawbacks

DIY Systems and Their Drawbacks

DIY projects can be great. Whether it is a backyard paver patio or a bathroom remodel, do-it yourself projects can save you a lot of money and get you the look that that you want given that you take adequate time and care. Unfortunately, they can also come with common errors that are hard to predict going into the project. Few projects exemplify this idea better than DIY alarm systems.

Although basic packages can be installed with little headache if you know what you are doing, more intricate systems will best be installed by an alarm company in order to be sure that your system will be effective and safe. This introduces us to the first disadvantage of DIY systems: the capabilities of the system are greatly limited unless you possess specialty knowledge of home electrical systems. This is not to say, however, that some standard systems don’t get the job done. Given the application, an entry-level intrusion detection system with few sensors and a wireless application can be fairly easy to install and quite effective.

Unfortunately, this introduces us to the second disadvantage of DIY systems. Unless you check with a central station or purchase the system from a select manufacturer, there is a chance that the system will not possess the ability to be monitored by a central station.

We often notice many individuals who purchase wireless systems with the intent of monitoring their home on their own. Unfortunately, this opens the door for mistakes. With a monitored system, there will always be central station personnel there to dispatch the police or fire department in the case of a legitimate alarm. If you monitor your system via your phone, you must depend upon receiving a notification on that phone. Text alerts may seem fail-proof, but a thief only needs minutes, and if you are away from your phone, have your phone on silent, or even have it turned off, you may not see that you have even received an alert.

Overall, it is important to keep in mind that DIY projects can be quite effective. Unfortunately, DIY alarm systems can open the door to many issues if you are not careful. So if you are contemplating installing a DIY system, it is important to make sure that you have considered all of the responsibilities that are associated with it.
