Thanksgiving Holiday Tips

Published by on November 24, 2020

Did you know that over 75% of residential fires on Thanksgiving Day are due to cooking and the average number of fires on Thanksgiving Day is more than double?

The statistics are astounding, and these numbers are only for fires that are reported. The great news is that with some simple fire safety planning, you can help protect your home – and your holiday dinner – from a kitchen fire.

Some of the top fire safety tips include:

  • Test all smoke detectors in your house regularly. They can be easily tested by pressing the test button.
  • Make sure all cooking surfaces are clean and free of any grease before cooking.
  • Don’t wear loose sleeves around hot stove burners or an open flame. They can melt, ignite, or catch on handles of pots or pans and can spill hot liquids or oil.
  • Keep small children and pets away from the stove, oven, or any hot liquids. Steam, hot liquids, or coffee can cause serious burns.
  • Keep a close watch over any food that is cooking on the stove or in the oven. If you must leave the kitchen, set a timer for a few minutes so you return to the area quickly.
  • Never put water on a grease fire.
  • If you are deep-frying a turkey (a personal favorite of our marketing team), do it outside, not on a wooden deck, in a clear uncovered area, and with a properly rated fire extinguisher close by.

It is also good to keep an all-purpose fire extinguisher in plain sight, not under the sink. Proper use training for everyone in the household is also recommended, especially for anyone helping in the cooking preparations.

From all the team at Washington Alarm, we hope you have a safe and wonderful holiday season.
